John Murray is a member of Expeditionary's Advisory Board.

John Murray is a Senior Advisor with CMPartners and Board Member of The Bridgeway Group.  Over the past four decades he has provided consulting services in negotiation and communication skills in many different regions of the world, while holding full-time faculty positions at four different universities in Texas, Cairo (Egypt), Syracuse New York and Washington DC.

 

From 1982-92, Mr. Murray served as initial executive director and then full time as President of the Conflict Clinic, Inc., a negotiation and mediation firm established with the support of Roger Fisher at the Harvard Negotiation Project.  Since 1992 he has often provided advice and conducted trainings in negotiation and communication skills as a consultant with CMPartners in many different countries, including Uganda, Somalia, Egypt, Lebanon, Turkey, Cyprus, Jordan, Palestine, Iraq, Afghanistan, India and Timor-Leste.  

 

He was involved in several World Bank projects as co-faculty for the Bank’s regular negotiation course, as an adviser and trainer for the Bank’s Nile Basin Initiative team, and as trainer and mentor for the World Bank Institute’s community forest management program in India.  

 

From 2002-11, he provided long-term negotiation advice and training to the staff of the PLO’s Negotiation Support Unit in the West Bank as Palestinians prepared for permanent status talks with Israel.  After 2011 he continued to support Palestinian groups in negotiation strategy and analysis, and in the 2020s has provided strategic advice on an adjunct basis.

 

Prior to his teaching and consulting work, he served for three years in the U.S. Marine Corps, after law school he worked two years as an associate at a Wall Street law firm, then served two years as Executive Assistant to Governor Robert Ray of Iowa, and in the 1970s was elected for three terms in the Iowa State Senate.

 

Mr. Murray received a Bachelor’s Degree with Honors in Government from Cornell University, a Master’s Degree in Public Law and Government from Columbia University, and a J.D. Degree from the University of Iowa College of Law, where he served as Editor-in-Chief of the Iowa Law Review.
